IMPORTANT: Strings Class: Questions and Answers

Hi Ginny -
Here is the communication about the strings class.   Could you forward this to all of the 2nd grade families whenever it is convenient?
Thanks,
Dawn xo

Lower School String Class:  Questions and Answers

Recently, your rising 3rd or 4th grader brought home information about the opportunity to play a strings instrument and be instructed by Tara Harris during the Pace Academy school day.
Here are some questions and Tara's helpful answers about joining Strings ....

  1. If my child chooses to play a stringed instrument will he/she also be able to join Minstrels?  Assuming the schedule remains as it is this year, strings does NOT interfere with minstrels. Most of my students this year participated in both.
  2. The sign-up form mentions that in 5th grade "Strings is a year long commitment".  Does that mean that instruction is not all year in 3rd and 4th? Or - does this mean that 3rd and 4th graders are welcome to drop out of the group during the school year?    3rd and 4th grade do indeed continue through the entire year however this year for 3rd and 4th we are giving students until October 1st to try it out and make their final decision.  Of course I encourage ALL students to give it a shot for at least the full year in order to get the full benefit, exposure and experience (i.e.; performances and field trip!)
  3. Do we let the children decide now what they want to play and then find the instrument over the summer?  Students may decide which instrument they prefer but they will all be measured in class on the first day to be sure they get the correct size. Students may choose between the violin, viola, cello or bass.  (Guitar and harp are not an option for this class although it is a bonus if students do already play one of these instruments since they tend to grasp the concept of a new instrument quicker.)
  4. Where is the best place to find string instruments for growing children?  I work with a rental company that supplies and services the student rental instruments. They are easy to work with, very convenient and the instruments are great quality! Parents will do nothing except fill out the rental agreement/application and the instruments will be delivered to Pace.  As the children grow - the rental company will exchange a larger instrument for a smaller model.
  1. How many days will the students have Strings Class in the 8 day cycle?   3rd and 4th grade students will have strings 3 days out of the cycle. 5th grade will meet 4 times per cycle.
  2. What is the recommended instrument practice time after school?   I recommend 15-30 minutes of practice time daily however I am well aware of the time constraints and the varying schedules throughout the year. Therefore, I don't necessarily "enforce" it so much as try to keep the students motivated and interested enough to want to practice on their own.  Obviously - the students who do practice tend to get the full benefit of learning their instrument and preparing for the final concert in the spring.  Many aspects or songs may come easy to some students so they may not need to practice the same amount for each one addressed in class.  I am flexible and willing to help in any way to insure that students make the most of their experience in strings for the year!

If your child did not bring home this form (or if you would like to receive an additional copy) please contact your homeroom teacher.
Students interested in playing a string instrument next year will need to submit a completed form to Anna Valerius before July 1.
If your child would prefer to play a band instrument - the band instruments will begin in 4th grade.

Many thanks to Dawn DiMeglio for getting these very helpful answers. Hope this helps.

A few things

First, Blair and I want to thank each of you for your contributions to Ms. Mahaney's bridal gift and for encouraging your children to finish their artwork project for her. We had pizza at lunch and opened presents. We were able to give her 4 place settings of her everyday china. She loved the booklet and everyone read their page out loud during lunch. Thank you for making this time special for her.

Second, Blair is coordinating drivers for the Tellus museum and desparately needs drivers. We still need 2 more and even an alternate is good to have. It is THIS MONDAY, May 3rd. Leaving Pace at 8:30 and returning by 2:00. Please email Blair if you can make it at bcrobbins@mindspring.com

Thank you and look forward to seeing many of you at the parent social this Sunday.

Wedding gift and artwork

Just another friendly reminder about Ms. Mahaney's wedding gift. Blair and I have firmed up with Ms. Jackson that we will present her the gifts next Wednesday, April 28. With that being said, we would like all artwork (theme is what your child thinks makes for a successful marriage) by this Friday in order to give Ms. Jackson time to help us put the booklet together. In addition, Blair is going shopping for Ms. Mahaney's wedding gift from us this week. I've heard from about 1/2 of you with contributions for the gift, thank you. Even if you can't send it for another day or two, please email me an amount that is forthcoming so that Blair can go ahead and make her purchase this week based on a pretty solid number. Contributions are from $10 to $25. No need to go over that. What a great gift she will get from us! Thank you.

Also, re: May 2nd. If you can attend the spring parent party at our house, please rsvp to Deni-Kay with your $12.50 per person. (checks are made our to her) Willy's is catering. Will be fun. She needs to call in the numbers by this Friday. Thanks.

I'll call your attention to the Sunday, May 2nd Parent/Teacher Social for the whole grade. Mike and I are hosting. Please save the date (and pray for good weather!)

Thanks for catching me.

Another all grade email is coming today that sums up many things going on in April and May for Pace and our grade. Please copy or save it as a reference. I will send updates as needed but this is a general overview. You can read it over the break--ha.

Final reminder: Mahaney Birthday tomorrow

Please bring a flower for a bouquet to give to Heather tomorrow. We'll sign a card in carpool--front of the castle. Do cupcakes around the lunch hour.

Thanks,
Ginny and Blair

Mahaney's Birthday is TOMORROW!

Thank you Linda Fuller for pointing out that Heather's Birthday is tomorrow, not later in April. Yikes. April Fool's on me.

I need everyone to bring in a flower and we will assemble an arrangement for her. Also, if you normally drop off in the serpentine, please drop your child off in the FRONT of the Randall House tomorrow as I'll be there with a card for all of Mahaney's class to sign and collecting flowers. Or, have your child walk around to sign it.

We will be by in the day to present the card and have some cupcakes.

Hi!
We are doing well.  The auction basket is great.  I am supposed to ask for
volunteers to help stage the basket the day of the auction, but I think I'll
just handle it - it can't be that hard!  I also need to do the shopping with
parent donation money.  Holly Mitchell and I talked about it - liquor store
gift card, car detail, maybe a couple of other things.

Thanks for coming up with such a thoughtful way to celebrate Heather's
marriage and bday!  It all sounds great to me.  And thank you too for
hosting on May 2.  What can I do to help with that? Why don't we meet for
coffee/lunch and have a planning session?  Any day next week would be great
- let me know.

In case you need it, my cell is 404-354-0083.
Thanks for doing all of this!

Blair:
Hope you are well. How are you. I never see you but know you are crazy
involved in so much stuff. Let me know how auction basket is. Any loose ends
need tying up.  Please read email below and give me your ideas and thoughts.
We decided at the Grade rep meeting to do the May 2nd party. Hope that is
okay.
Thanks!

As you know by now, Ms. Mahaney will tie the knot in May. Mike and I will
host an end of year parent/teacher (just 2nd grade teachers only) party on
Sunday, May 2nd for all 2nd grade parents. It will be a Mexican theme and
there will be a modest cost associated with it.
(Please mark your calendars) At that time, Blair and I would like to present
Heather with a gift from the parents. We will begin collecting a
contribution from each parent (optional) beginning after the Easter break.

We will also be asking each child in the class to prepare an "original"
piece of artwork depicting what they think makes a good marriage. We will
create a "book" titled the Top 20 Things That Make A Good Marriage for
Heather Mahaney! Something like this. Be original, put the word or words up
at the top of the page. Use an 8 x 11 ½ sheet of white paper. Be colorful
and creative! This "book" will be presented along with a special cake during
school on the final week before her wedding in May.

We welcome your ideas. Given the hectic pace of our lives at this time of
year, this seemed like a reasonable assignment. If any of you want to create
something more elaborate, we are completely open for you to run with it.

Also, Heather's birthday is April ????? On this day, all we ask is that you
sign a card in carpool line and bring a flower in for a nice birthday
bouquet. Virginia and I will be in carpool line that morning getting your
signatures and collecting flowers. We will have some cupcakes and present
the flowers  and card to her at lunch.

Thank you and hope this sounds like a plan. Again, mark your calendars for
Sunday, May 2nd and pray for good weather!

We welcome your ideas. Given the hectic pace of our lives at this time of year, this seemed like a reasonable assignment. If any of you want to create something more elaborate, we are completely open for you to run with it.

Also, Heather’s birthday is coming up this month. On this day, all we ask is that you sign a card in carpool line and bring a flower in for a nice birthday bouquet. Virginia and I will be in carpool line that morning getting your signatures and collecting flowers. We will have some cupcakes and present the flowers  and card to her at lunch. I'll send out something very specific as that time gets closer.

Thank you and hope this sounds like a plan. Again, mark your calendars for Sunday, May 2nd and pray for good weather!

 HI Grade Reps,

Greetings to all this post spring break:

Hope you had a great week off and getting back into the swing of things. Just a few things:

1. The Pace Race is around the corner on Saturday, April 24th in the morning. We need volunteers to help out for what is traditionally a fun aerobic morning for our Lower School families. The "jobs" are easy such as manning spots around the course, taking time cards at the end, etc. This is a great way to get hubbies involved, too. Please email back if you can help. Again it is a short volunteer time frame (7:30 ish to 9:00 ish) Also, consider if you have older MS or US children that might be able to help, too.

2. Is everyone okay with the PE rotation or do you need further clarification? It goes like this:
Whatever your child is first, you move to the right on the sheet that you should have gotten in your Friday folder. So if you are Sports Stations, you move to swimming next then tumbling last. Swimmers tumble next then finish with Sports stations and then tumblers, go to sports stations next and finish with swimming.  Here are the start and finish dates, you may have these so sorry for the repeat:
1st rotation:   March 16 to March 26
2nd rotation:   April 20th to May 3rd
3rd rotation:   May 4th to May 20th
Fitnessgram:    April 6th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 14th and 15th---so it looks like this is a break from the rotation so no swimsuits necessary, etc.
Field Day Practice:     May 24th
Field Day:              May 25th

Hope this helps.

This Friday there is a special art class for Ms. Mahaney's class. Please wear clothes you wouldn't mind getting dirty. However, jeans are still not appropriate.
Thanks and hope this helps.

Girls Night Out this Thursday at Leslie Wierman's home

I know you are coming off a fun weekend of fun in the snow and hopefully some R & R.

You should have received our invite for this Thursday's Girl's Night Out with second grade moms at Leslie Wierman's home at 7 pm.  We have heard from 17 of you but want to hear from the rest of our cute fun crowd. Please respond so that we have a good idea who is coming. We don't need everyone to bring food, just yourself and whatever you prefer to sip on!

Please come as it will be great fun to see everyone before spring break!  Reply to the evite you should have received last night.

See you Thursday!
